Portell, Raimon !QUIERO UNA CORONA! (I WANT A CROWN!) ISBN 84-2463924-3. Illus. by Ignasi Blanch. Barcelona: La Galera, 2005. 36 pp. $16.95. Ever since Julia was 3 years old, she has always wanted a crown. Finally, her parents give her one, and off she goes to the palace. Although the guards are reluctant to let her in, she points to her crown and announces, !Soy la reina Julia! (I am Queen Julia!). Thus begins Julia's encounter with the young king, where she learns what kings do--give orders--and he learns what girls do--all kinds of fun activities. A bit incongruous, perhaps (such as the "king" and "queen" wiping chocolate off their hands on the palace's velvet curtains), yet Blanch's slapstick pencil and watercolor illustrations add a fantasy tone to this story with strong European themes and motifs. Age 5-7
